Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Newman.
Kat, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I arrived in South Florida/Keys in 2012, I had no idea what the future would hold. I did know that I was unfulfilled professionally and chronically undervalued. Someone recommended the wedding industry; specifically, wedding officiant.
At first glance, this was a match made in heaven. Four years later, that match has become a passion, and a dream come true.
My business has grown steadily and since March 2015, I am performing weddings full-time.
Name recognition, reviews and carefully cultivated pro relationships have been at the heart of my success.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Knowing when to pull the plug on the “side job” and then struggling with the bills afterwards was scary. Sticking to my guns and maintaining/raising my prices… keeping my brand solid and expressing my confidence were all tests I had to undergo.
Now, the expansion to new markets, going through identifying my new competition and clients… that is my current challenge.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is Wedding Ceremonies. I am known as an Officiant. Simply put, I legalize the vows.
However, I have literally fallen in love with love. Unlike many other officiants this is ALL I do, fulltime. I pour my heart, soul, talents into each wedding from last-minute elopements to full-blown formal weddings.
I am fiercely proud of my 120+ 5 star reviews, my strong name recognition and what I have learned about, marketing/sales, public speaking, the wedding industry and running a business.
I am known for being fun, warm, easygoing and spirited. Trust is the most prized quality I have been told I possess and is critical in any client relationship but ESPECIALLY destination weddings.
Finding ways to reach couples before they select a “friend” to officiate is one of my greatest challenges.
What were you like growing up?
I always wanted to be an actress. Always loved attention and talked too much. Good student but suffered from what now would be labeled ADHD.
Was not into sports or anything physically challenging. Never had a specific career path.
Loved people, make friends easily.
Wound up majoring in teaching but struggled through studies and went to work in bus admin instead.
